Catharine R. Stimpson’s public service has included chairing the New York State Council for the Humanities, the National Council for Research on Women, Ms.Magazine Board of Scholars, Creative Capital, and Scholars at Risk. She was also on the board of PBS. She was the president of the Modern Language Association and the President of the Association of Graduate Schools. 

She remains committed to Scholars at Risk and Creative Capital, and is a long time member of the board of New York Live Arts and more recently joined the board of Bennington College. She is also part of the governing council for the Magna Charta Observatory in Bologna.

Kate is the host of the Skirball Tapes: NYU Skirball’s interview series with figures who embody a radical imagination. Recent interviewees include Gloria Steinem, Natalie Diaz, Robin Coste Lewis, Edmund White, Karen Finley and Anne Bogart. Academic Freedom

Kate speaks nationally and internationally on the humanities, the university, and with urgency on the subject of academic freedom and freedom of expression in authoritarian times.

Scholars at Risk protects scholars suffering grave threats to their lives, liberty and well-being by arranging temporary research and teaching positions at institutions in its network; it also provides advisory and referral services. Institutions can get involved with Scholars at Risk by joining the SAR network.

Creative Capital is a nonprofit organization that fund artists through grants. Artists are supported to create groundbreaking new work — to amplify their impact and foster sustainable artistic careers.

New York Live Arts is a center of diverse artists that explore the movement arts through live gathering and performance. Their work transcends barriers between and within communities.

Bennington College is a private, not-for-profit, nonsectarian college located in Bennington, Vermont. Its students develop ideas in the classroom, then put them into practice in the field to nurture their individuality and creativity.
